According to the British Columbia Councils for Families (BCCF), Parents, academicians and experts all in agreement that parenting is one of the most challenging roles of adulthood. Also observed by the BCCF is that while there has already been a great deal of attention on how to understand the effect parenting can affect a child development, there has yet to be enough attention on how the parent’s won sense of well-being is affected by the child. The council notes further noted that, because of the strong links with child development outcomes, both parenting stress and their sense of satisfaction with their parenting skills are of key concern to child and family researchers. Chronic stress and depression may reflect problems in parenting, as reported by a new study conducted at the University of Rochester.
Also in the study done by University of Rochester it is further shared that the view that mothers suffering from depression and anxiety disorders may be oversensitive and highly reactive, while mothers who struggle financially or live in high-crime neighborhoods were more capable of paying no attention to their children. They also found the psychosocial stressors (poverty and depression) interrupt the body’s stress response. As a result, mothers become more sensitive, hostile, intrusive or neglectful toward their children.
Medical help is usually provided to parents who seek advice on how to deal with their stress and anxiety problems. Doctors often prescribe psychotherapy or oral medication, like antidepressant Paxil, for example, to aid the patients in coping with their family issues.
According to numerous medical reports stemming from thousands of Paxil users, along with results of research studies, have shown that Paxil may potentially bring more harm than benefits. The United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has already issued various public health advisories stating that Paxil side effects may increase suicide risks and may also cause birth defects to newborns.
Paxil has many other common side effects which has been known to include: sexual dysfunction, psychosis, delusion, hallucination, memory loss, sleeping problems, eating disorders, abnormal personality changes, unusual mood shifts, irritability, hostility, self-harm and other acts of violence. Any parent who are experiencing depression should take note of these side effects because they can surely bring severe damages to themselves as well as to their families.
For someone to start preparing for parenthood, it would be best if one or both parents have adequate knowledge of effective parenting and have ample social support in order to relieve some of the hardships of parenting. It is also important that if either the mother or the father of the child is experiencing the signs and symptoms of depression and anxiety attacks that they seek medical attention as it could affect the parent-child relationship.
If either parent is contemplating taking antidepressants such as Paxil for their problems, then they should know that there have been several Paxil Lawsuits filed against the drug’s manufacturer for various reasons. Consult with a doctor for more information on safer alternatives to antidepressants.
